Description / Background

The Iluka and Environs Honour Roll is a timber board, with a pediment at the top that is decorated with a golden Rising Sun emblem. The central panel features two eternal flames that have been painted in gold and red. A carved border edges the whole piece.

The text on the roll is hand painted in gold and the list of names is divided into sections, based on the conflicts in which Australians have served: Boer War, the First and Second World Wars, Korea, Malaya and Vietnam. No names are listed for Korea or Malaya.

Attached to the bottom of the roll is a small metal plaque, bearing a dedication to Private Stanley Frederick Marsh, who lost his life on 30 May 1943 during the Second World War. He was born on 14 October 1911 at Iluka. He enlisted in Newcastle and died on 30 May 1943 as a member of the 2/30th Australian Infantry Battalion, as a prisoner of war in Malaya.

The first honour roll was made by Harry (Henry) Burchell in 1923. It was hung on a wall in the new Iluka Soldiers' Memorial Hall at its official opening in October 1923. That roll was lost during hall renovations around 1938. The current roll was made by Brian Thomas, past President of the Iluka sub-Branch of the Chatworth Island RSL (Information provided by the Iluka Museum and History Group in July 2022).

The roll is available for viewing when the hall is open for public occasions.
