Michael John is the son of Sapper Reginald Finley Harnett, who is also listed on the Griffith Cenotaph. He falsified his date of birth to be old enough to enlist, giving his age as 20 years and 2 months on his Attestation Form. He was killed in action in Malaya on 11 February 1942 and was buried in Kranji War Cemetery, Kranji, Singapore.
