The Commemorative Park was established as part of the Australia Remembers, 1945-1995 program, a program of activities organised by the federal government to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the World War II. The park was opened on 5 September 1995 by the Australian Government Veterans Affairs Minister Con Sciacca.
