Bangalow and District Lady War Workers Great War Illuminated Address

Bangalow and District Lady War Workers Great War Illuminated Address
Description

This war memorial is an illuminated address, presented behind glass within a simple timber frame. The address is in honour of the Lady War Workers of Banganlow and the surrounding small villages, who worked tirelessly to support servicemen during the First World War. Similar groups were formed throughout Australia during the war to raise funds for soldiers to be sent overseas and organise welcome home functions.

The address was created by the John Sands Company of Sydney. It is beautifully decorated with the crossed Union Jack and Australian flags at the top, surrounded by wattle blossoms. There are also three illustrations, which speak to the experience of soldiers and sailors during the war. At the top left are waves crashing against a beach and opposite this is the famous Sphinx of Giza, standing in the sands of Egypt. At the bottom of the page is a ship on the ocean.

The text of the address is elegantly printed in colourful calligraphy in the centre of the page. At the bottom are the signatures of 10 veterans, eight of whom are listed in the veterans table below, as the other two names are illegible.

The memorial is located in the foyer of the Bangalow RSL Memorial Hall. Access to it is restricted to the opening hours of the hall.

A similar memorial is listed on the NSW War Memorials Register as the Deer Vale Lady War Workers Great War Illuminated Address.

On behalf of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers of the above mentioned localities we desire to express our appreciation of your noble and untiring efforts on our behalf during the Great War, 1914–19

Your splendid spirit and noble example is worthy of, and has won our highest commendation, and you will always have the great satisfaction of knowing that you did all that could be expected in the time of your country's need.

The result of your splendid work was to be found in every theatre of war in which the members of the Australian Imperial Force were engaged, and carried to us the memory of our Homeland.

We trust that your future will be happy and prosperous, and that you will long be spared to enjoy the privilege and freedom of our Great Empire.

Signed on behalf of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers.
