Description / Background

This war memorial consists of two timber honour rolls, which commemorate 47 members of the Bangalow Oddfellows Lodge who served in the First World War.

The first honour roll is a large timber board with a classical pediment embellished with decorative beading, and a crossed Union Jack and Australian flag painted in the centre. Turned timber columns frame each side of the board. The names and fate of 36 veterans are painted in gold and listed in two columns.

The first honour roll was unveiled on 9 August 1916 at a meeting of the Bangalow Oddfellows Lodge. The event was presided over by Brother W H Reading (FS) who called upon Brother Tinson, Deputy Grand Master of the Casino Lodge, to unveil the memorial. The roll was made and donated by Brothers Beckingsale and Sansom, with the artistic decoration and lettering of 22 names completed and donated by Brother P Robinson. At the time, 22 men from the Bangalow Lodge had enlisted out of a membership of 80. A further 14 names were added to the board after its initial unveiling (Northern Star (Lismore), 16 August 1916).

The second honour roll is a simply designed rectangular timber board with a decorative frame. It contains the additional names and fate of 11 servicemen painted in gold and listed in a single column. The unveiling date of this board is unknown.

The rolls are now located in the Heritage House Museum and are available for viewing when the museum is open to the public.
