Description / Background

The memorial is a large printed poster, which has been mounted on board and presented in a timber frame behind glass. The poster is dedicated to Company Quartermaster Sergeant Albert John Archer, who was killed in action in the First World War.

The poster features several decorative elements. At the top of the page is a double-hemisphere world map, printed in gold and flanked by a lion and a dragon. Below this is the printed dedication and a wreath-like design in the centre of the page, both of which are also in gold. Finally, there are five black and white photographs of war memorials in France and a list of battles British troops participated in across Europe. The memorials are the Ulster Memorial, South African Memorial, Thiepval British Memorial, Highland Memorial, and the Australian Memorial, which was destroyed by the Germans in the Second World War.

The poster includes the note 'Designed by M.C.', who was possibly an English designer. It may have been mass-produced, as Archer's details are printed on a small paper label and stuck in the centre of the wreath, below the first section of printed dedication that reads 'For King and Country and to the glory of God and in everlasting memory of'.

The memorial is on display in the hall located at the rear of St Mary's Anglican Church in West Armidale, NSW. Although he enlisted as Roman Catholic, a second paper label at the bottom of the memorial states he was a "Former Sunday School pupil" of the church. Access to the memorial is restricted to the opening hours of the hall.
