Dungog and District Honour Roll Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This memorial consists of two wooden honour boards located in the foyer of the Dungog Memorial RSL Club. The larger board contains the names of those from the district who served in the Second World War. The names are listed in five vertical columns, with those who died on active service listed in the centre column. The smaller board next to it contains additional names of Second World War veterans, as well as the names of those who served in Korea and Vietnam. The origin of this memorial is believed to have stemmed from a meeting of the Dungog Patriotic Committee on 12 June 1940 where they decided to create an honour roll register to record the names of the men enlisting from the district, their period of service, their rank and their dependents. Within a month it was reported that over 100 recruits had been recorded. Throughout the war, the Dungog Chronicle, Durham and Gloucester Advocate published an advertisement calling for the names of men who had voluntarily enlisted for service. Each edition published the names received for the three services as well as their rank, serial number and fate. As a result, the honour roll was compiled from these lists and was unveiled at some time after the end of the Second World War. It is uncertain where the memorial was originally unveiled and the actual date of its dedication. The honour roll is now located in the Dungog RSL Memorial Club where it is available for viewing when the club is open. Notes based on research by Robert McLardy regarding names which have been misspelt or incorrectly recorded on the roll of honour. A K Atkins is listed as A R Atkins. J T Gurr is listed as J G Gurr. J A Saint-Smith is listed as A Saint-Smith.
