Description / Background

This war memorial is a simple parchment roll of honour, presented in a timber frame inset with glass. The page features an illustration at the top, containing various symbols representing military service and the British Empire. These include Britannia holding a laurel wreath, a soldier and sailor, the Union Jack and Australian flags, and the First Commonwealth Coat of Arms.

A ruled table, with columns for name and rank, fills the main body of the page. This indicates the roll is a template design, presumably purchased by the East Tenterfield Progress Association as an efficient, and possibly low-cost, method of creating a memorial.

The history of the roll is unknown. However, we can assume from the inscription at the bottom of the page that it was presented to the Tenterfield Shire Council, as Alderman A. H. Taylor was on council during the First World War.

The roll is now located in the RSL Pavilion of the Tenterfield and District Soldiers Memorial Hall. It is accompanied by two matching rolls for the war, listed separately on the NSW War Memorials Register as the Alderman Whereat First World War Roll of Honour, Tenterfield and the Mayor Alderman Kneipp First World War Roll of Honour, Tenterfield
