Description / Background

This war memorial is a timber honour roll for men and women from Garema and District who served in the Second World War. The board includes 28 names, which are neatly printed in gold lettering. Two names are marked with a gold cross, indicating they died in service.  At the top of the memorial is a classical pediment and on either side of the names are small shelves and two carved columns. The detail reveals that the memorial has been created by a skilled craftsman.

The memorial was initially recorded by the Forbes Shire Council when it was located in the Garema Hall. More recently many memorials have been re-located to Club Forbes in Forbes and this memorial is one of these.

This memorial was sponsored by the Garema Red Cross Society which was formed on 21 June 1940. Action was taken to create a memorial and a Garema Honor Roll Fund was established. The Forbes Advocate, 8 April 1949 advertised a dance to be held in the hall on Tuesday 24 May to raise money for the Fund. A bus was to come from Forbes. (Forbes Advocate, 6 May 1949)

The Forbes Advocate, 27 May 1949 advertised a further dance to be held on 31 May 1949 to raise further funds. The organisers were Merritt, Foster and Davis. A Euchre Party was held in the hall on 18 April 1951 to raise funds for the Honor Roll. (Forbes Advocate, 10 April 1951) Dances were also held in the Garema Hall to raise funds for other organizations such as the Forbes District Ambulance on 11 May 1951.

In the Forbes Advocate, 13 November 1951 the Garema Red Cross invited residents to the unveiling of the Honor Roll in the hall to take place on Sunday 18 November at 3 o'clock. The Forbes Advocate, 23 November 1951 described the unveiling ceremony in detail. The ceremony closed when President Mrs N. Dawe unveiled the Honour Roll.

The Garema and District Honour Roll is available for viewing when the Club Forbes is open to the public.
