Harold Thompson Memorial Window, Rylstone Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial is a stained glass window located in St James Anglican Church, Rylstone, dedicated to Harold Eustace Thompson who served in the First World War. Harold was a Second Lieutenant in the 23rd Trench Mortar Battery Royal Field Artillery who died in France on 7 October 1916, aged 26. The memorial was erected by his family in February 1920. The window is the largest in the church and depicts the well known Pre-Raphaelite painting "The Light of the World" by William Holman Hunt. This window is the only window in the church dedicated to a First World War soldier, and was the first stained glass window to be installed in the Church. It occupies the most prominent position in the building, situated behind the sanctuary, with the congregation facing the window. The window was in poor condition and was removed and repaired in February 2025. The repairs consisted of completely disassembling the window, cleaning and repairing the glass and reassembling the window with new lead. The deteriorated timber frame was also replaced.
