Inverell Remembers Nurses of the Great War Roll of Honour

Inverell Remembers Nurses of the Great War Roll of Honour
Description

This war memorial is a paper honour roll for nurses from the Inverell district who served in the First World War. The names of 17 women are neatly printed on the page in black lettering, surrounded by a decorative scroll border, which incorporates leaves as a motif. The roll also features the symbol of the Red Cross, who trained nurses and raised funds to support the war effort.

An examination of the birth places of the nurses on the roll demonstrates their link with the Inverell district. These places include Armidale, Bundarra, Inverell, and Uralla. Their home addresses include the regional locations of Armidale, Bundarra, Inverell, Moree, and Mount Russell, as well as the Sydney suburbs of Randwick, Roseville, Darlinghurst, and Sydney city itself. Not all of their Australian service records can be found, as some travelled overseas with the Red Cross or joined the English nursing service.

The roll is presented in a simple timber frame, inset with glass. It hangs on a wall inside the Inverell Pioneer Village RSL Museum, where it is available for viewing during opening hours.
