Description / Background

The memorial is a timber crucifix dedicated to the memory of Alfred Lloyd Evers, who served in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) during the Second World War. The memorial was placed above the pulpit in St John's Anglican Church in Molong at the time of its dedication in May 1946. At the base of the crucifix is a metal plaque inscribed with the dedication to Evers.

Alfred Lloyd Evers was born on 22 December 1908 at Molong. He enlisted at Maroubra on 10 November 1942 and as a Leading Aircraftman, was based at Headquarters North Western Area. The Molong Express and District Advertiser, 23 November 1945, reported on his death that he was the only surviving son of Mrs M M Evers. Two weeks earlier, he had undergone a double operation in Yaralla Military Hospital at Concord West. He became critical and his family was summoned to the hospital where he died on 20 November. The newspaper described his service details as well as his employment before entering service with the RAAF. Earlier that year, his younger brother, Flight Sergeant Edwin Evers, was killed aged 21 years, when a Sunderland Flying Boat crashed off the Scottish Coast.

A large congregation attended a Eucharist service at St John's on 19 May 1946, at which the Anglican Bishop of Bathurst, Dr A L Wylde, dedicated both the memorial to Alfred Evers and the Poole and Finch memorial windows. Alfred had been one of four original altar boys at the church as child (Molong Express and District Advertiser, 24 May1946). Two of the six brass candlesticks on the altar were dedicated by the Bishop the year prior, in memory of Alfred's brother, Edwin.

The crucifix is available for viewing when the church is open for services.
