New Italy First World War Honour Roll, Woodburn Middle Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The New Italy First World War Honour Roll is made of varnished red cedar. It has a pediment at the top, decorated with the words 'New Italy' and paintings of the crossed Australian and Italian flags. Listed on the centre panel are the names of 13 sons from Italian families from the area who served in the First World War. A dedication to them is printed on the board in English and Italian. Attached to the wall on either side of the roll are details about the New Italy settlement and the creation of the memorial. The project was supported by funding from the Australian Government under the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program. The memorial was designed by Mr Jim Muldoon of Grafton. Research on the names was led by Peter Blackwood, a member of the New Italy Museum Committee, with assistance from others. The roll was unveiled at the New Italy Community Hall on Remembrance Day, 11 November 2015. The roll is available for viewing when the New Italy Museum is open to the public. Note: New Italy is located approximately 13 kilometres south of Woodburn, NSW. While some resettled in surrounding areas, others moved further afield - to Queensland and around NSW. Certainly, the first generation of young people born into those families, particularly the young men, needed to pursue work opportunities away from New Italy. Wall information 2 It was these young men, all with Italian parents, who were confronted with the "call to arms" as Australia formed the Australian Imperial Force - the 1st AIF - was to join the British forces in Europe.
