Description / Background

The Pyrmont and Ultimo Great War Memorial stands proudly in Union Square in Pyrmont, NSW. It is a large, four-sided monument, topped with a beautiful bronze statue of a female figure representing 'Peace'. Over 100 years old, the memorial was unveiled by Sir Walter Davidson on 8 April 1922.

The main body of the monument is made of trachyte and its base is sandstone. It is positioned on a circular bed of red bricks. The circle is surrounded by a low concrete kerb, inset with decorative wrought iron edging.

Bronze plaques are attached to each side of the monument, inscribed with the dedication and the names of those who served in the First World War. The men who died during the war are listed together on the plaques on the front of the memorial. Enlistees are inscribed on the plaques on the other three sides, and are listed in alphabetical order.

The Peace statue is the focal point of the memorial. She holds a shield in her left arm, bearing the Biblical phrase 'Their names liveth for ever more'. The statue was designed and made by famous Australian sculptor Gilbert Doble.
