Description / Background

This war memorial is a large timber honour board, comprised of ten panels, on which veterans' names are recorded in gilt lettering. The board is positioned across the back wall of St Clement's Anglican Church in Mosman, NSW, beneath a series of four stained glass windows. It is flanked by the Australian flag and the Union Jack, as well as several naval badges. These badges commemorate the long association between HMAS Penguin, the 4th Submarine Squadron, and the church.

The Sun (Sydney) reported on 24 August 1915 that a congregation numbering 1,000 including members of the 17th Battalion of the Senior Cadets, together with officers and returned soldiers witnessed the unveiling of the roll of honour at the church. The church was draped with the flags of the allies and laurel leaves with a gilded laurel wreath surmounting the roll of honour. The unveiling ceremony of the memorial (which contained 101 names) was performed by the Rector, Reverend C. Yarrington.

After the unveiling, Reverend W.H. Croft read the names on the honour roll and Reverend P.J. Beasley also assisted in the service. In his sermon, Mr Yarrington spoke of the daring, devotion and self-sacrifice of those who had enlisted.

The larger Roll of Honour was unveiled in the church by Colonel Dobbin on Sunday 14 January 1917. The honour board contained over 300 names. The preacher was the Rector, the Reverend Clive Yarrington. In part he stated that 'the honour board told of men who had gone out to risk all in the good fight. He could not think that death meant the end for such as they, but he felt also that the relations deserved an honour board as much as their warriors. Theirs was the awful anguish and staying behind, and waiting - waiting to hear'.
