Description / Background

St Thomas More Catholic Church in Werris Creek, NSW, is a dedicated war memorial church. It is of modern architectural design, typical of the 1960-1970s period. It has a modernist spire, with a Latin Cross at the top. The exterior walls feature decorative brickwork patterns and there is also a sculptural metal panel near the entrance. Inside the church is a small crypt area, which includes a Latin Cross, two Australian flags and dedicated plaques from the Werris Creek RSL.

The building was designed by architects D.J. Hunt and A. Day. The builders were M.J. and J.A. O'Dell. The church was dedicated on 1 August 1971 by The Most Rev. J Freeman, Bishop of Armidale.

St Thomas More's War Memorial Church was built by Reverend Father B.P. Shanahan P.P. who died 27th February 1971.

The church was blessed and opened by The Most Rev. J. Freeman, D.D. Bishop of Armidale on 1st August 1971.
