Description / Background

The Sydney Harbour Trust operated from 1901 to 1 February 1936, when it was replaced by the Maritime Service Board of NSW. There were 323 Sydney Harbour Trust employees who joined the 1st Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) and served in the First World War. Of these 323, 44 died while on active service with the A.I.F. during the war.

This photographic honour roll has 41 photographs of the veterans who died while on active service, and three photographs are missing. One died at Fromelles, seven at Gallipoli, 22 in France, 11 in Belgium, two in England and one in Australia.

Notes about the veterans:

  • 14 of the veterans have no known grave.
  • Father and son, William James Crocket and William Ezra Crocket both died in France, 11 days apart.
  • Lieutenant Herbert Edwin Williams was killed in action, with no known grave, during the landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915.
  • Lieutenant Walter Willoughby Smith was awarded the Military Cross on 23 May 1919, six months after he died in France.
