Description / Background

The memorial is a decorative copper honour roll, mounted on a timber backing board, which commemorates the past pupils of Tyndale Public School who served in the First World War. It was unveiled at the school on 25 June 1920 (Daily Examiner (Grafton) 24 June 1920).

The roll features a pediment shelf at the top with an egg-and-dart design in the centre. An ornate banner, crowned with two small sprigs of flowers, is situated below and contains a brass plaque with the memorial dedication inscribed. The Union Jack and Australian flag sit either side of the banner. Small decorative columns frame each side of the top half of the honour roll, and the bottom of the honour roll is decorated with a fleur-de-lys between cut flowers. The names of 17 servicemen are inscribed on three brass plates attached side by side on the roll.

The memorial was created by the Wunderlich Company in Sydney, which specialised in the manufacture of tiles and metal ceilings, and produced many metal honour rolls for the First and Second World Wars.

The school was established in 1868 and closed in December 1975. The roll is now mounted on a wall inside the Brushgrove Community Hall, above the front stage. It is available for viewing when the hall is open for public occasions.
