Description / Background

This metal honour roll is dedicated to the workers of the former Werris Creek Colliery, which was operated by the Preston Coal Company from 1925-1963 (Whitehaven Coal website). Their names are printed in alphabetical order, across three columns. At the bottom of the roll are the emblems of the RSL, Liverpool Plains Shire Council and Whitehaven Coal.

The Werris Creek RSL sub-Branch provided the following information on the establishment of the honour roll:

A member of the sub-Branch brought the concept to a meeting of those who worked or died at the colliery should be remembered via an honour roll. As it was a colliery honour roll, the concept was supported by the branch. As a councillor, a member of the branch took the concept to the Liverpool Plains Shire Council and the Whitehaven Mining Company agreed to carry it out as a Community Contributions Project. The mine researched the employees' names and the sub-Branch checked them with locals and through the local papers for feedback. The sub-Branch and mines then contributed financially to the development and erection of the sign.

A number of the names on the roll are those who served in the Second World War and the research is based on information provided by the Werris Creek RSL sub-Branch.

The roll is located on a wall leading to the entrance of the Werris Creek Library.
