Lieutenant Thomas Currie Derrick was born on 20 March 1914 in Adelaide, South Australia. He enlisted in the Australian Army at North Adelaide on 5 July 1940.

As a Lieutenant in the 2/49th Australian Infantry Battalion, he died of wounds on 24 May 1945 at Tarakan, Borneo. He was buried in the Labuan War Cemetery in Malaysia.

He was awarded a citation for the award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal, following action at Tel El Elisa, Egypt, in July 1942 and a later citation for the award of a Victoria Cross following action at Satelberg, New Guinea, in November 1943.
