Description / Background

The Dunedoo War Memorial Health Service Centre, opened in 2008, is built on the site of the former Dunedoo War Memorial Hospital and incorporates the brick wall, foundation stone and memorial plaques from the original building as part of the entrance. The centre commemorates the men and women from the Dunedoo and District are who died whilst on active service during the various military conflicts in which Australians have served.

Following World War One, attempts were made by the Dunedoo community to create a war memorial. Funds were collected and it was proposed to use these to construct and equip a hospital. However, following a public meeting on the 12th March 1926, the proposal for a hospital was rejected because of the shortage of funds.

The Dunedoo Chamber of Commerce revisited the plans in 1943 after Sister Hargeaves closed her private hospital. The Dunedoo Memorial Hospital Board was established by the Minister of Health on 10 March 1943 and the first board meeting was held on the 6th April. In March 1944 tenders were called for the building of the hospital. The Mudgee Guardian reported on 20th April 1944 that Wallace and Magee of Dubbo had been awarded the tender for the building which had been designed by the New South Wales Government Architect.

The foundation stone for the Dunedoo War Memorial Hospital was laid by the Honourable C A Kelly, Minister for Health on the 26th August 1944. The War Memorial Hospital was officially opened one year later by Captain the Honourable W. F. Dunn MLA on Saturday 8th September 1945. It is believed that the original hospital building was extended in the 1960s and this building extension was opened by The Honourable W. F. Sheahan, QC, LLB, MLA on the 30th May 1964. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the hospital in 1995, a helipad was established on the site.

The current health service centre was officially opened by Christine Robertson MLC on behalf of the NSW Minister of Health, Reba Meager on the 6th June 2008. This replaced the original hospital building which was demolished around the same time. It recognises the original purpose of the hospital as a war memorial by incorporating the name and several of the commemorative features in its entranceway.
