Albert Chowne was born on 19 July 1920 and enlisted at Willoughby, NSW, on 27 May 1940.

As a Lieutenant in the 2/32 Australian Infantry Battalion, he was killed in action on 25 March 1945 in New Guinea. He was buried in the Lae War Cemetery at Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea.

On 6 September 1945, Chowne was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry in New Guinea. He had previously been awarded the Military Medal.
