Veteran Notes/Bio

Staff Nurse Agnes Hannah Wood, 27, was born in Auburn and she attended Auburn Public School. When she enlisted in the AIF - Australian Medical Corps on 10 May 1917, she nominated her father, Thomas Wood of 39 Northumberland Road, Auburn, as her next-of-kin.

Sailing on the Mooltan, Nurse Wood disembarked at Suez, Egypt on 19 July 1917. She served at the 14th Australian General Hospital at Abbassia in Egypt for nearly two years before departing for England in June 1919. During her time in Egypt, Nurse Wood was hospitalised for four months with 'Paratyphoid', despite having a paratyphoid innoculation before leaving Australia.

Nurse Wood was granted leave to go to England on the condition the time would be deducted from her accrued leave on return to Australia. With the number of Australians in United Kingdom hospitals rapidly diminishing through 1919, Nurse Wood was returned to Australia on the Nestor, which arrived in Sydney on 15 December 1919. During the voyage, and on returning home, she had severe 'Enteric Fever' and she was invalided out of the AIF Medical Corps on 27 May 1920.
