George drowned with four other Boy Seaman when the boat they were in capsized off Dobroyd Point in Sydney Harbour. Of the five lost, only partial remains of George were recovered on 24 Mar 1919. It is believed the boys drowned and their remains were taken by sharks after they died.  

The following Boy Seamen were lost with George: Bamford, Hebert Edgar VIC; Earl, Leslie William VIC; Fellows, Charles William VIC; and McPherson, John Eden VIC.
