Sydney Breakspear was born on 19 September 1912 in Tamworth NSW, the son of Charles Wearne and Winifred Florence Breakspear. In 1939, Sydney joined the Militia Forces, 30th Battalion, and in June 1940 he joined the 2/19 Infantry Battalion, AIF. He was posted overseas to Singapore and Malaya. While serving in Malaya, he was reported missing in action and presumed dead on 22 January 1942. 

Sydney was a bank officer at the Commonwealth Bank when he enlisted to serve his country. In 1940, he had married Honor Henderson.
