Labourer Lionel Brizzolara was born in Lucknow, NSW, and he had served in the ‘39th Infantry Citizen Forces’. When he enlisted at Liverpool, NSW, on 30 May 1915, he declared his age to be 19 years 11 months.
Private Brizzolara embarked on the Orsova in July 1915 and after some time in Egypt, he joined the Anzac forces on Gallipoli on 6 November 1915, six weeks before the evacuation.
Back in Egypt, Brizzolara was allocated to the 2nd Battalion, 1st Australian Division. He proceeded to France via the Mediterranean port of Marseilles, arriving on the Western Front at the beginning of April 1916. Four months later, he was wounded in his right hand and thigh, in the first few days of the battle of Pozières. Brizzolara died of wounds on 27 July 1916.

Brizzolara was buried in the Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension, located in the AIF's allocated area, immediately west of the battle-gateway town of Albert.
