Description / Background

This war memorial consists of three marble tablets, inscribed with an honour roll for the Second World War. They are attached to the front of a low, concrete monument, made up of three steps or levels. The names are grouped together by those who were killed in action, ex-pupils, or district volunteers. A fourth tablet, positioned on the left side of the memorial, is titled 'Barker's Vale School Pioneers'.

The honour roll tablets were unveiled at Barkers Vale Public School on 27 May 1947, by the then Member for Richmond, Mr. H. L. Anthony. They were originally placed at the base of a flagstaff; however, this is no longer on site. Mr Anthony's speech was reported in the Northern Star the next day. He said:

It is altogether fitting that these tablets should be at the base of the flagstaff. The flag is able to fly at the masthead here today because there were men and women in Australia who were prepared to give everything, even life itself, to keep it there.

Located inside one of the school buildings is an unidentified timber honour roll, inscribed with 20 names (image 6 above). There is one name listed for each year from 1951 to 1970. It is unclear if this roll is in honour of military service or other service, such as to the school community. Do you know more about this roll? Please contact the NSW War Memorials Register
