Description / Background

This war memorial is large archway, forming a set of gates to the entrance of a local sportsground in Bega, NSW. It is a replica of the Menin Gate in Belgium. Dedications and an honour roll for the First World War are attached to the pillars of the arch. A roll and multiple plaques for the Second World War and later conflicts have been added to the memorial over time.

The foundation stone was laid on 8 March 1922 by Mr. H. M. Blomfield, ex-Mayor of Bega. The unveiling ceremony was performed by mothers of fallen soldiers on 24 May 1924. The memorial is Heritage and National Trust listed.
