Description / Background

This stained glass window is in memory of those who were lost at sea when 2/3 Australian Hospital Ship Centaur was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine (I-117) during the Second World War. The window features an image of the ship, positioned under the emblems of the Merchant Navy and Australian Commonwealth Military Forces. The Australian national flag, Australian Red Ensign, and a collection of Australian flowers are also depicted. The window is accompanied by a detailed roll of honour.

The Centaur was attacked off the southern Queensland coast, at approximately 0400 hours on 14 May 1943. Of those on board at the time, 268 lost their lives and 64 were rescued. Of the 12 nursing sisters serving on the ship, only Sister Ellen Savage survived. Private J. .J. Walder later died of wounds and was subsequently added to the official list of causalities compiled by the Central Army Records Office, Melbourne.

The memorial is located inside Concord Repatriation General Hospital and access to see it may be restricted.
