Description / Background

The Coolamon and District Boer War Memorial consists of a tall white marble tablet, supported by two metal posts. The top of the tablet is beautifully carved, featuring four draped flags and a shield-like shape to highlight the dedication.

The body of the tablet contains the names of men from the district who served in the South African (Boer War). There are 25 names in total, listed in alphabetical order.

The memorial was created in 1901 by Mr Mark Fitzwilliam of Wagga Wagga, NSW. It was originally positioned at the entrance to Coolamon's School of Arts Building in Cowabbie Street.

Sometime after 1950, the memorial was relocated to the RSL Hall in Loughnan Street. In 2020, following consultation between Coolamon Shire Council and the Coolamon RSL sub-Branch, grant funds were obtained to restore the memorial and relocate it to a position of prominence beside the Coolamon Cenotaph in Cowabbie Street. Services and remembrance ceremonies for all commemorative days are held at the Cenotaph. Restoration works included cleaning and replacing lead lettering that had fallen off the memorial. This work was completed in 2020 and the memorial was rededicated on Anzac Day 2021. Also on site is the Coolamon National Service Memorial, which was made in 2020 in a similar style to the Boer War memorial.
