Description / Background

To commemorate the Centenary of Anzac, the setting for the single memorial stone at the front of the West Pymble Community War Memorial Hall in Ku-ring-gai Council's Bicentennial Park has been significantly embellished. Council's original ‘Lone Pine’ War Memorial at Bicentennial Park has been incorporated with the existing West Pymble War Memorial commemorative rock. Nine plaques, each dedicated to a Gallipoli soldier who was awarded the Victoria Cross, were moved to this more visible location from the 1991 memorial.

The memorial includes a paving pattern that reflects the Victoria Cross medal, brass lettering inset in the rising sun  pavement that is an extract from the poem ‘For the Fallen’ by Binyon (1869-1943) and  a new dedication plaque set on a sandstone plinth. The lights and flagpole have been renewed, seats installed, accessible parking and paths have been built and the whole area has been landscaped.

The memorial was completed in August 2015, a century after the Battle of Lone Pine in August 1915.

They died that we might live in peace

Dedication plaque

Ku-ring-gai Council commemorates the Centenary of ANZAC 2014 - 2018.

On 25 April 1915 the ANZACs were part of the historic landings on the Turkish Gallipoli peninsula. These men displayed courage, endurance, initiative, discipline, and mateship – the qualities that came to be called the ANZAC spirit.

During this campaign, nine Australians were awarded the Victoria Cross, with seven of the awards made for actions by the1st Australian Infantry Division against formidable entrenched Turkish positions at the Battle of Lone Pine during 6-9 August 1915. The Victoria Cross is the highest award for the most conspicuous bravery or act of valour or self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy.

This plaque is dedicated to the memory of the men and women who served in the Australian Defence Forces during war and peace. We acknowledge those veterans who survived and we honour those who paid the supreme sacrifice.

FOR THE FALLEN

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”

This is an extract from the poem by Robert Laurence Binyon (1869-1943) originally published in The Times newspaper on 21 September 1914.
