Description / Background

The Merimbula War Memorial is an expertly constructed stone wall in the form of a redoubt. Plaques, name plates, and military badges adorn the stonework. A field gun is located to the immediate right of the memorial.

25 Pounder Field Gun

The 25-pounder was the mainstay of the Artillery units of the Australia Army, from 1940 until 1975. Over 2,000 were taken into Australian service, three quarters manufactured in Australia. The 25-pounder was first used by the Australian Forces in December 1940. These guns served through campaigns in north Africa, Syria, Greece, Malaya, New Guinea, the Pacific islands and Vietnam. The gun fired variable charges to propel shrapnel, smoke, high explosive and solid Anti-tank shells. the general specifications of the 25-pounder are: Calibre 3.4 inches (87.6mm), Weight in action 3,968 lbs (1800kg), Maximum range 12.250 mt.
