Description / Background

Opened to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, and spread over an acre of land beside the Great Western Highway, the Remembrance Garden has several individual monuments and plaques. Two of these memorials, the Private John (Barney) Hines Memorial and the Mt Druitt and Colyton First World War Roll of Honour, have their own entries on the NSW War Memorials Register. The garden has a concrete path, two low brick walls and a small creek with a wooden bridge. There is a large slate rock and plaque commemorating the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and also a plaque commemorating the 60th anniversary. Towards the rear of the area, there is a symbol for each of the three services, being an anchor, a howitzer gun and propeller. Beside these is a black marble plaque on a plinth presented by Mt Druitt Sub-Branch RSL inscribed 'Lest we forget'.

Lest We Forget

60th anniversary plaque

They shall grow not old...

They went with songs to the battle, they were young. Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted. They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.

O.L. Binyon (from For the Fallen)

Commemorating 60th year Anniversary World War II, ending in 1945. To those who served and to those who paid the supreme sacrifice.
