Description / Background

A stately rendered brick hall, dedicated to those who served in the First World War.

The Northern Champion, 23 June 1923 reported the old St John's Sunday Hall had been demolished. On 19 April Mr Kerle presented a plan of building to the Memorial Hall Committee. Collectors were appointed to raise money for the substantial hall. Early in January 1924, tenders for erection of the building were extended to Monday 28 January. The tender was awarded to Mr H. E. Carrett of Taree for construction of the Doric styled building.

The foundation stone was laid on Wednesday 27 February 1924 by the Bishop of the diocese Dr Stephens. The Northern Champion, 31 May 1924 described in detail the official opening of the memorial building on Tuesday 27 May by Canon Phillips.
