Description / Background

This memorial is a paved walkway through the remembrance precinct in Fotheringham Park, Taree. It was designed to link the Taree War Memorial with the Taree Honour Rolls.

On 23 January 2015, The Manning River Times interviewed Darcy Elbourne, senior vice president of the Taree RSL and chairman of the Taree 2015 Anzac Day Planning Committee, about the memorial which was under construction. He stated:

The walkway is to consist of the marked bricks including the significant campaigns and battles the Australian troops fought in during World War I and adds to the story of the memorials and its surrounds.

The inscriptions include: Gallipoli, Palestine, Middle East-Sini, Syria, Beersheba, Hindenburg Line, Peronne, Bapaume, Mouquet Farm, Brookseinde, Polygon Wood, Fromelles, Passchendaele, Poelcapelie, Pozieres, Somme, Hamel, Villers-Bretonneux, Messines and Bullecourt.

The walkway was dedicated on 25 April 2015. During the event, a bronze plaque attached to the paving commemorating the Centenary of Anzac was also unveiled.

The project was assisted by a grant from the 'Anzac Centenary Local Grant Program', received in 2014.

Anzac Day services and other commemorative events are held in Fotheringham Park.

Inscription

Centenary of Anzac plaque

They shall grow not old ...

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,

Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow;

They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;

They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we think that they are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.
