Made of sandstone, the memorial depicts an Anzac soldier standing on a plinth, holding a rifle to his side. It was dedicated on 15 December 1918 by Governor General Ferguson.
When subscriptions opened in 1917 for the erection of the memorial, Charles Howard Wood donated the total cost of the memorial which was ₤1400.
This monument thy gift of C Howard Wood Esquire is erected in honour of the citizens of Waverley who enlisted for service in the Great War of 1914-1918 and was unveiled by His Excellency the Right Honourable Sire Ronald Craufurd Munro Ferguson P.C., G.C.M.G. Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia on the 15th December 1918.
