Description / Background

The memorial is a sandstone pillar, topped with a white marble statue of a soldier. White marble plaques are inset into each face of the pillar, which are inscribed with the names of those who served in the First World War. Servicemen who died during the war are listed together, on the plaque attached to the front face.

The pillar is positioned on a sandstone platform, which has been tiled. A set of sandstone steps at the front of the memorial lead down to the footpath that runs along Carrington and Hyndes Streets. Two marble tablets are inset into the wall bordering the steps, inscribed with the name of the memorial.

The unveiling ceremony took place on 28 January 1922, in front of a large crowd. Several addresses were given by local officials and the memorial was unveiled by Lake Macquarie Shire Councillor J. Johnston (Newcastle Morning Herald, 30 January 1922).

The memorial is located in West Wallsend Soldiers Memorial Park, which is Lot 1 of DP 301342. It faces south-east, towards the intersection of Carrington and Hyndes Streets. The park is entry number 80324 from the Geographical Names Board of NSW. Also in the park is the West Wallsend Wall of Remembrance
