The book was compiled as part of a joint venture for the Council of the City of Armidale and the Council of the Shire of Dumaresq. It was donated by the R.S.S. & A.I.L.A. (N.S.W. Division) Armidale Sub-Branch. As noted in the frontispiece of the book, it was designed to record the names of those who served in the Australian Military Forces from both districts during both the First and Second World War. The book is displayed a timber and glass display case which was presented to the library by a local businessman, Mr Claude A. Skinner. In 1955 the Armidale City and Dumaresq Shire Councils made a unique decision to jointly fund the development of a War Memorial library for the region in what Mr J. McGregor, (secretary of the NSW Library Board) described at the time as “a rare example of two councils coming together to run a joint library service”. Major General Ivan Dougherty officially opened the Memorial Library and unveiled the Roll of Honour on Saturday 5 May 1956. The Book of Remembrance was originally located in the original War Memorial Library located on Faulkner Street, Armidale. It was moved to the new War Memorial Library building on Rusden Street, Armidale in September 2021. Inscription Cover Names of those who served in the 1914 - 1918 War and 1939 - 1945 War.
