Description / Background

The memorial is a stained glass window within St Mary's Anglican Church, Narromine, dedicated to Bombardier Ross William Barlow, who lost his life during the Second World War. The memorial window was manufactured in 1947 by noted glazing company, John Ashwin & Co, Sydney. The window is divided into two with a soldier in the top panel, dressed in military uniform with a shouldered gun and a slouch hat held in one hand. The bottom panel contains decorative floral designs with the military Rising Sun emblem situated in the top right. The dedication to Bombardier Barlow appears below the decorative panel and outlines his service details in the 2/15 Field Regiment. The memorial does not feature the traditional religious figures often associated with a memorial window.

Ross William Barlow was born in Narromine on 3 February 1920. He enlisted on 21 June 1940 in the 2nd Australian Infantry Force. As a Bombardier in the 2/15 Field Regiment, he served in Singapore and died on 12 February 1944 as a Prisoner of War (POW) in Thailand.

A special dedication ceremony for the window was held at St Mary's Church on 20 April 1947 in the presence of a large congregation. It was conducted by Reverend Howard W Ellis, who was Rector of the church when Ross Barlow volunteered. The unveiling was performed by Mr C B Whitelocke, who was a POW in the same camp with Barlow. The window was presented by Barlow's parents, Mr and Mrs G H R Barlow and family, in memory of their late son and brother (The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate, 24 April 1947). A further description of the unveiling ceremony was published in the Narromine News and Trangie Advocate, 22 April 1947.

The memorial window is available for viewing when the church is open for services.
