Description / Background

This war memorial is an Olympic-sized swimming pool, with an associated amenities block. It is located in Dundas Park in Narromine, NSW.

The opening of the original Narromine Swimming Pool was held on 11 February 1931. After the Second World War, the Narromine War Memorial Baths Committee was formed and set out to raise funds for construction of a new pool. By February 1960, working bees had ploughed 500 acres of land to grow wheat, the sale of which would be a major fundraising event. Voluntary labour had contributed to the works and would be needed up to the harvesting stage. By March 1962, the committee had raised £19,854. When other contributions from the United Services Memorial Club and a government subsidy were included, the total available for the pool was £37,000 (Western Herald, 12 February 1960; 23 March 1962).

The pool design and construction were the work of L V Deakin, AMIE Consulting Engineers and Thorby Bros. Contractors Pty Ltd Builders. However, despite best efforts, the pool was not ready for the start of swimming season in April 1963. The cost of the project had also gone up to £51,500, excluding the entrance building (Western Herald, 1 February 1963).

The pool was opened later that year on 5 October by Nevil R. Barlow, chairman of the committee. It was dedicated to the men and women who had served in conflicts in which Australia had been involved.

The amenities block was erected by the Narromine Municipal Council in 1979, with Dick-Smith Leffler and Giles Pty. Ltd. as the architects and E. Davis as the contractor.
