Description / Background

The Cabra-Vale Park Memorial Bandstand is a pink and red structure, with a red tin roof. It was unveiled on Anzac Day, 25 April 1922. Attached to the base of the bandstand is an honour roll of those who served in the First World War.

The sides of the bandstand contain seven decorative metal panels, which are positioned between the columns that support the roof. They are titled: Gallipoli Landing, Loyalty Parade, Children Playing, Picnics in the Park, Street Parades, Fairfield Red Cross and Soldiers Marching. Each panel is accompanied by a bronze plaque that tells its story. The panels were installed at a later date.

Notes on veterans' names: All status codes have been taken from information provided by the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour and records in the National Archives of Australia.

Plaque

Cabra-Vale Park Memorial Bandstand

This bandstand was erected in the park in 1919 in honour of the soldiers who died in the First World War. The bandstand was built at a cost of 350 Australian pounds and dedicated on Anzac day 1919. A marble plaque on the northern side bears the names of the 22 local men who died in the war.

In 2001, as a result of representations from the local member for Cabramatta Ms Reba Meagher, and in consultation with members of the Cabra-Vale Diggers' Club, Fairfield Heritage Committee and local community groups, Fairfield City Council commissioned the decorative metal panels around the bandstand. The panels depict those people from the district who fought in the war and supported the war effort at home, and were were designed and manufactured by artists Philippa Johnson and Henry K. Topolnicki of Art.Is.An Option.
