Description / Background

The Cootamundra War Memorial Library is a red brick building erected in honour of those men and women from the area who served in the First and Second World Wars. It was opened on 28 November 1991 by Mrs Katherine Greiner, wife of then NSW Premier Nick Greiner. It was built on the site of the former War Memorial Library which had been constructed in 1953-1954.

Following the Second World War, a war memorial fund  committee was formed. In February 1953, the Cootamundra Herald reported that the committee was asked to undertake construction of a Memorial Library as soon as possible. By June, sketch plans had been drawn up by Stuart Williams and approved by the council. Entrance to the new library was to be located on the site of the present Literary Institute.

In December 1953 the Cootamundra Herald reported that work on the library was to commence in the New Year and a tender had been accepted for 9,995 pounds by Mr C. Fuller to complete the project. The War Memorial Committee had raised about 5,500 pounds and the Municipal Council contributed a further 5,500 pounds towards the cost of the project.

In June1954 the Daily Advertiser, (Wagga) published details of the building which included a war memorial entrance and an honour roll tablet which was to be placed in a parchment book with the names of all servicemen who fell during the First and Second World Wars would be housed.
