Gunner L. R. Ebsworth First World War memorial plaque, Christ Church Cathedral, Grafton Middle Description / Background The memorial is a rectangular bronze plaque dedicated to Gunner Leslie Ramsay Ebsworth, a former Grafton resident, who lost his life at Ypres in Belgium on 15 October 1917. The plaque is mounted on a wooden backing and is decorated with a black incised border featuring a small fleur de lis in each corner. The memorial is inscribed with decorative black lettering and outlines Gunner Ebsworth's service details with the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) in the First World War. The memorial is located within the Christ Church Cathedral in Grafton. Leslie Ebsworth was born in Granville in Sydney. As a single law clerk of Orange, he enlisted in the 1st Light Horse Regiment, 9th Reinforcement on 9 May 1915. His unit departed from Sydney on board HMAT A8 Argyllshire on 30 September 1915. As a member of the 13th Field Artillery Brigade aged 26 years, he was killed in action on 15 October 1917 at Westhoek, Belgium. He was buried at the Hooge Crater Cemetery at Zillebeke, Belgium. The Grafton Argus and Clarence River General Advertiser, 21 November 1917 reported that D.J. Lobban had received a letter from Mr E. Ebsworth, Chairman of the Land Board of Orange, who occupied a similar position in Grafton. Gunner Leslie Ebsworth was his only son and the young soldier was articled to Mr Lobban in Grafton. The Mayor of Grafton, Ald. McFarlane ,wrote to Mr Ebsworth expressing his and the community's deepest sympathy. The plaque is available for viewing when the Cathedral is open for services.
