Description / Background

This war memorial is a polished timber honour board, made of Queensland maple. It features fluted pilasters and a semi-circular pediment, which includes a carving of the Rising Sun emblem of the Australian Commonwealth Military Force. The names of more than 60 members of the Harwood Island community who served in the First World War are printed in gold on the main panel of the board.

The memorial was made by John Sands Ltd., of Sydney, at the request of the Harwood Patriotic League. The league was formed by October 1915, to assist the volunteers who had enlisted in the war. As each soldier left for service, he was given a patriotic farewell and a gift. A similar offering was made when soldiers returned home.

The unveiling ceremony took place during a concert at Harwood's Water Brigade Hall on 21 October 1916. The event attracted some 200 people and was reported in the Daily Examiner on 24 October. The hall's stage was beautifully decorated with flowers and foliage and the walls were draped with the flags of Allied countries. Mr W A Zuill, M.L.A, officially unveiled the roll, during an interval in the musical program. Other speakers on the night included Reverend A R Martin, Councillor F Lawrence, and Mr D Nicholson, who spoke on behalf of the Patriotic League. A bugle call was also played by Mr Bullanger.

The memorial is now located in the Harwood Community Hall.
