Description / Background

The war memorial gates at Horsley Park Reserve, Horsley Park NSW, were installed in the mid-1940s to commemorate those who served in the Second World War. They were opened on Anzac Day, 1946 (Source: A short guide to the history of Horsley Park by Maria Toth, 2002). Fairfield Council erected side pillars with swinging gates and an archway over the gates bearing the words "Horsley War Memorial," circa February 1947.

The gates were officially dedicated at an Anzac Day service several years later on 27 April 1952. Trees were also planted to commemorate Horsley men who died in service or were killed in action. The original plantings of these trees have since been replaced.

The park is a valuable community sportsground and green space, with a playground and amenities. Anzac Day services were held on site until the late 1990s.
