Description / Background

The Kalang First World War Honor Roll is a timber memorial board in the shape of a heraldic shield. It is attached to a timber frame and features the Rising Sun emblem of the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces painted in gold at the top.

The roll lists 29 men who served in the First World War who have a connection to the community of Kalang, located near Bellingen on the Mid North Coast of NSW.

To date, no historical information about this memorial has been found in newspaper archives. However, we can assume it was constructed after the war as the names are listed in alphabetical order. It was also likely unveiled at Kalang.

The roll is now located in the Bellingen Museum and is available for viewing during opening hours. Also on site is the Kalang Second World War Honor Roll, which has a similar design.

Several other rolls in the museum's collection are also shield shaped with gold decoration and text. It is possible all were made by the Bellingen Furniture Factory, established after the war and conducted by L. McNally and G. Griffiths. It specialised in the construction of furniture made from cedar, silky oak, beech, and pine.
