Description / Background

This war memorial is a brass honour roll in the shape of an open book. It is mounted on a plinth that is flanked by two metal statues of soldiers. The whole is protected by a glass case. Hanging on the wall above the memorial are two crossed flags.

The memorial commemorates the members of the Lismore Water Brigade and Rowing Club who died in service or were killed in action during the Second World War. On 27 September 1941, the Northern Star reported 14 members of the club had enlisted.

The memorial is located in the Lismore and District Workers Club. Access to it is restricted to the club's opening hours.

About the club

The Lismore Rowing Club was established by July 1896. A sub-committee was formed in 1945 to investigate the question of boats and training of crews for the proposed Lismore Water Brigade. In August, it was reported the sub-committee was to recommend the formation of a new organization to be called the Lismore Rowing Club and Water Brigade. The recommendation was to be made at a meeting at the council chambers scheduled for 22 August.

The Northern Star, 4 December 1945, reported a public meeting was to be held that night and the council was to hand over the assets held in trust for the Lismore Rowing Club. At a meeting held the previous day, the club's name was changed to the Lismore Water Brigade and Rowing Club. It was reported 90 young men had signified their intention to join.
