Description / Background

The Mathoura Cemetery War Memorial is a brick wall featuring a stainless steel honour roll. The roll lists the names of those who served in the First and Second World Wars.

Inscription

In memory of our soldiers who did not return

Many of the young men and women from the Mathoura district went to war. Some did not return and are buried far away from the ground in which, under other circumstances, they might have been laid to rest. This memorial is dedicated to their memory that we might not forget them. Research for this project was carried out for the Mathoura & District Pioneer Cemetery Committee using information from the Australian War Memorial, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and from family sources. Some details are missing, either because the task of identifying and separating those of similar names proved impossible or they died of their wounds after returning to Australia. One is known to be buried in this cemetery.

World War I

[Names, Dates of death, Places of death, Ages, Memorials or places of burial]

World War II

[Names, Dates of death, Places of death, Ages, Memorials or places of burial]

Each has won a glorious grave - not that

sepulchre of earth within they lie, but

the living tomb of everlasting

remembrance wherein their glory is

enshrined. For the whole earth is the

sepulchre of heroes.

- Pericles, Greek general and statesman, 494BC - 429BC
