Description / Background

The Orange High School First World War Roll of Honour board has been lost and its current location in unknown. A historic photograph of the memorial has been provided by the school. The board featured a classical shaped pediment on the top with the title 'FOR KING AND COUNTRY The Great War 1914-18' printed with the school emblem surrounded by a wreath beneath it. Most of the names are listed in two vertical columns, however four names are listed horizontally along the top edge. The names are not listed in alphabetical order, reinforcing the fact that the memorial was created during the war and additional names were added after its original unveiling.

The roll of honour board was carved by Mr A Milner Armstrong and was described in an article published in The Leader (Orange) at the time as being 'of an exceptionally neat design, in polished oak, a carved laurel wreath entwined in two knots or admiration, being conspicuous'. The roll of honour had been funded by the parents of the current pupils whilst the lettering had been done by Mr Gartress free of cost.

The roll of honour was unveiled in the Orange High School Assembly Hall before a large audience on Wednesday 13 June 1917. It was unveiled by Mrs H Irwin who at the time had one son killed in action, another wounded and a third son reported as missing in action. Others to attend included Mrs McNeilly (Mayoress), Rev. J.C. McDonald, Rev. C.F. Walkden Brown, Rev. J. Way, Mr G. Blumer (Inspector of Schools), Canon Walker Taylor, Mr G. Williams and Mr S. Coker, (Secretary of the Railway Institute, Orange).
