Description / Background

The Orange Methodist Church Second World War Honour Roll is a distinctive timber board, made of Queensland maple. It has a gabled top, which features the words 'World War Two' surrounded by a golden wreath. There are also small timber shelves at the top and bottom of the board and carved supporting columns on either side. The names of those who served in the war are printed in gold and listed alphabetically over five columns on the main board. A small timber plaque has been added to the bottom of the board, which includes supplementary names.

The memorial was the work of Mr Harold Read of Orange and the gold lettering was completed by Mr O. Eyles and Sons. It was unveiled at the church on Sunday, 15 April 1951 by Staff Chaplain L.B. Smith, Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). The service was conducted by Reverend Guy L. Walker, Superintendent of the Orange Circuit, assisted by Reverend D.A. Trathen, Principal of Wolaroi College, both of whom served as chaplains with the RAAF. Those in attendance included representatives from civic bodies and ex-servicemen and women's organisations. The Methodist, 5 May 1951, described the solemn service in detail and noted it included hymns, prayers and a recitation of the names of those who paid the supreme sacrifice. 'The Last Post' and the 'Reveille' were sounded by Bugler Kevin Shearwood. At the time of unveiling, the memorial contained 155 names of men and women who served.

The memorial is available for viewing when the church is open for services.
